Social media according to you

Welcome to Organizational Communication (OrCom) 152 –Communication Trends and Styles.

This semester is going to be another joyride with me and this time, social media will be our playground. But it’s not all easy play because we have a full semester ahead to discover, learn, love (or hate) social media. And part of the discovery and learning is through a communication blog–your work in progress; you in progress.

We are doing a communication blog not only to experience using one of social media’s fundamental tools (rather than just talk or read about it), but also to participate in co-creating content online on how social media impacts organizations and the practice of Organizational Communication. No, we’re not saying we’re social media experts; we’re here to offer our perspective on social media as we see and experience it, and in the process provide others–your blog readers–a fresh or different way of looking at things. It is social media according to you.

Below are some notes on how to get started on this new role you’ll be playing:

Creating the Communication Blog

• Create your own communication blog using WordPress.com. We’re all using one blogging platform for uniformity and efficiency in monitoring and evaluation. Don’t worry because WordPress is easy to use.
• Make your blog personal, from the name to the look and feel. Make it reflect your personality as an Organizational Communication student.
• Once done creating your comm blog, please leave your blog’s URL in the comments thread below with your full name. Please indicate if you are from the AM or the PM class. I’ll link you in this blog and you can do the same for mine on your blog. Add your batchmates’s blogs, too!

 Developing the Content

• Keep posts on personal rants and raves to a minimum. Take note that it is your communication blog and must therefore showcase your informed opinions, comments, and thoughts on any and all things social media and its impact on organizations.
• Instead of parroting what has been discussed in class on your blog, offer a new perspective or additional information. You might have a better or different idea of looking at things and so your blog is an opportunity to say it. Or you might have come across an interesting movie, video, article, website, pop culture phenomemon, or any human interest subject that interests you, which you think is worth blogging about because it is related to or has implication on social media practice.
•  You are required to make at least 10 blog posts for the entire semester. You can finish all 10 in a week if you want, but it would be better to do posts as you journey through the semester to reflect your learning and progress in class. Deadline of posts is a week before the Finals.
• Each blog post must have the following mandatory tags in addition to your own keywords: Organizational Communication, UP Manila, Orcom 152.
• You are also required to write at least 20 comments on other communication blogs throughout the semester. Comments must be substantive–offering elaboration or counter-argument,  a personal insight or realization, among others. A comments log must be submitted a week before the Finals.

Next week, we will have an Organizational Communication graduate as guest in class to share her tips on web content writing. The discussion will be helpful in not only improving your writing for the web, but also in ensuring that your posts will get Google’s attention.
